Contest of Chaos

On Nov 15th, 2025 we will be holding the first Rink Rats Contest of Chaos, a Fall 2025 postseason, one day tournament. Registration will first be open to players of the Fall 2025 season with a substitute registration opening 1 week prior to the event.

Format:

• The Contest of Chaos will consist of a total of 7 games. Each team is guaranteed two games, with two teams playing a final championship round.  

• Teams will be divided into two pools based on end of season rankings. Teams 1, 3, and 5 will form pool A and teams 2, 4, and 6 will form pool B. Each pool will play a total of three games, with each team playing both of the other two teams within its own pool. The team from each pool that has the highest combined score from both of its games will move on to the championship round. If two teams within a pool have the same combined score, goal differential will break the tie.

• If the championship game results in a tie, the winning team will be determined by a shootout of 3 players per team. If the shootout results in a tie, the winning team will be determined by total number of team goals for the day first then goal differential for the day second. If there is still a tie, both teams will share the contest win.

• Games will be played with the same timing as regular season games (i.e. 3 minute warm up, 18 minute periods, 1 minute intermissions).

Additional Rules:

• A registered player must be available to play in all of their team's games (at least the first two AND the championship if their team moves forward). To allow for proper coordination of substitutes, this is a necessity (i.e. if you can only play 1 game, please do not register).

• Each team will have exactly 15 players (including subs) and 1 goalie.

• A "Gretzky Rule" will apply, where each individual player will only be allowed two goals per game. If a single player scores more than 2 goals in a single game, any subsequent goals beyond 2 will not count towards the team's score.

• Penalty minutes will be replaced with penalty shots. The puck will be placed at center ice with the fouled player, all other players on the ice will line up on the far boards. When the fouled player touches the puck, all other players can begin racing down the ice. If the shot does not result in a goal, normal play continues as players reach the puck. If the fouled player has already previously scored 2 goals for the game, the team captain may select another player to take the penalty shot.

• To increase fairness, individual team captains will not be responsible for setting up their own substitutes (substitute assignments will be detailed below).

• Game 1 (Ratrick Swayze vs C of Red) - 10:15-11:15am [North Rink]

• Game 2 (Ratrick Swayze vs Jur-ice-ic Park) - 12:30-1:30pm [South Rink]

• Game 3 (Jur-ice-ic Park vs C of Red) - 1:45-2:45pm [South Rink]

• *Pool B*

• Game 1 (Fellowship of the Rink vs Blueberry Bulldogs) - 11:30am-12:30pm [North Rink]

• Game 2 (Fellowship of the Rink vs Polar Bears) - 12:45-1:45pm [North Rink]

• Game 3 (Polar Bears vs Blueberry Bulldogs) - 2:00-3:00pm [North Rink]

• Championship Game - 6:30-7:30pm [North Rink] (The final 15 minutes will be used for photos).

Cost:

• $8.50 per player per game (including substitutes). This covers the ice time, as well as paying the refs and scorekeepers (refs and scorekeepers will be paid using the same structure as the regular Rink Rats seasons). Any remaining funds will go into the Rink Rats account for future use.

• As always, goalies will not be required to pay a fee.

• Players will be required to pay their initial $17 (covers two games) to their captain by 11/13/25 @ 11:59pm. Captains are then required to pay their initial team fees of $255 to me by 11/14/25 @ 11:59pm.

• Players on teams who move on to the championship game will be required to pay their championship $8.50 to their captain by 11/16/25 @ 11:59pm. Captains are then required to pay their championship team fee of $127.50 to me by 11/17/25 @ 11:59pm.

Fall 2025 Season Player Sign Ups:

• Each captain (if they haven't already) will post an event in their team benchapp for the Contest of Chaos. 

• Players will "check in" to indicate their registration. 

• The final Fall 2025 Season games will occur on 11/8/25 and final season rankings will be posted by 11:59pm (this is when each team will know their Contest of Chaos schedule). 

• The lock date/time for player registration will be 11/9/25 @ 12:00pm. Captains will then have till 11/9/25 @ 11:59pm to submit their roster and sub needs.

Substitute Sign Ups:

• Substitute sign ups (for players and goalies) will be sent to the entire Rink Rats email list Saturday, 11/8/25 @ 8:00am. As this is a tournament with a guaranteed 2 hours of play, possibly 3, I am strongly urging those who sign up to have had some amount of previous experience playing hockey on the ice.

• Substitutes will be assigned to teams on 11/10/25, at which point I will let subs know which team they've been assigned to and provide contact information to that team's captain.

• Substitutes will be assigned in the order in which they sign up, distributed to teams in a rotating, descending rank order (e.g. Team 1 needs one sub, Team 2 needs two subs, and Team 3 needs three subs. Sub 1 to Team 1, Sub 2 to Team 2, Sub 3 to Team 3, Sub 4 to Team 2, Sub 5 to Team 3, Sub 6 to Team 3).
