Hi, I'm Dave. Here's a little about me and how this all got started.
I'm Dave Shuey,
I work as an operating room charge nurse at Utah Valley Hospital and am fairly new to playing ice hockey. I played a lot of unofficial roller hockey when I was growing up and ended up taking an ice hockey class in college at the Peaks through UVU. I've always been ok on skates which i attribute to my extensive rollerblading when I was growing up.
In December 2025 as I was at Pure Hockey getting some stuff for my kids who were looking to start skating and learn to play classes I asked one of the employees if it was normal for 35 year old, overweight people with minimal to no hockey experience to start playing, and the emphatic "Yes!" began the rolling of the unstoppable boulder.
I got some basic gear and started going to stick time, I started taking my kids to public skate, I enrolled in an adult hockey skills clinic, and began emailing team managers about joining an adult hockey league team. I, like many of you, learned how long wait lists are to be able to get onto a team and began asking, "What if we put something together ourselves?"
So, I got to talking with a handful of people at stick time and we started exploring the idea of starting an unofficial league at the Peaks Ice Arena on Sundays. I spent the better part of a month reaching out to employees at the Peaks, had a few meetings with them, and distributed an interest questionnaire to as many people as possible. After an overwhelmingly positive response I began moving forward with the process to book private ice time. The option for a Sunday league became difficult due to staffing resources but we were given the option to begin on Saturdays for proof of concept.
Our inaugural season (Summer 2025) was played with 4 teams from April 19, 2025 to June 14, 2025 and was a massive success! We had enough interest for our second season to bump up to 6 teams and we had to close our roster sign ups after about 15 hours due to all 6 teams hitting capacity (90 players and 6 goalies). We are constantly working to improve the experience and get as many people on the ice as possible.
I don't know where this will go and how long it will last, but every season that we can help players gain experience and build a bigger community is one more success in my book.
