Information on how the games will be set up and run, as well as how the seasons will be structured.
Game Format
Timing
Games will run for 1 hour total and the zamboni will run between games. The zamboni time is not part of our hour ice times.
Games will consist of a 3 minute warm up and three 18 minute periods with a 1 minute break between each period leaving 1 minute at the end of the game to vacate the ice for the zamboni to start on time. All time will be running time (the clock will not stop).
As of now we will plan on there being no overtime or shootouts, at the end of regulation time either one team will win, or it will be a tie.
The zamboni runs for 15 minutes and if we have another game the second ice time will begin.
Officials
To continue to keep this inexpensive we will not be paying to hire actual officials. Players who are willing to volunteer as officials/refs during games in which they are not playing will be compensated from available league funds after ice time has been completely paid for. The most recent fee was $30 per game, but this may change from season to season depending on available funds. All fees will be paid out at the end of the season.
We will be hosting an officiating/reffing clinic before the start of the Spring 2026 season and I encourage everyone planning to ref to attend. Refs who have attended the reffing clinic will be paid the full fee and refs who have not attended the reffing clinic may be paid 50% of the fee (e.g. if a player who attended the clinic will be paid $30, a player who didn't may be paid $15). Additionally, players who attend the clinic will be given priority to sign up over those who don't.
We will plan to utilize only one official/ref per game, if a volunteer is present. If a second volunteer would like to assist during the same game they may do so but will not be paid the fee.
The majority of Society members who voted agreed that we would like our games to be as close to USA Hockey rules as possible. That being said, volunteer officials will be primarily responsible for dropping the puck at face-offs, calling off-sides and icing, and calling any obvious penalties. Outside of that we ask volunteers to call what they're comfortable with.
Resources for potential volunteers can be found here ---> USA Hockey Rules and Resources
Beginning with the Spring 2026 Season, if there is a vacancy or a no-show for either the ref or the scorekeeper, the captains of the teams playing will be required to step into those roles.
Score Keeping
Again, to continue to keep this inexpensive, score keepers will also be by volunteer. Players who are willing to volunteer as score keepers during games in which they are not playing will be compensated from available league funds after ice time has been completely paid for. Scorekeepers will be paid 50% of the regular reffing fee but this may change from season to season depending on available funds (e.g. if a ref who attended the clinic will be paid $30, the scorekeeper will be paid $15). All fees will be paid out at the end of the season.
The Youtube tutorial for how to run the scoreboard can be found here ---> Daktronics All Sport 5000 Score Keeper tutorial
Score keepers will run the scoreboard, keep time, and record goals, assists, and penalties. A score sheet with the games players/numbers will be provided at the start of each game.
If you are interested in volunteering to either act as an official or to run the scoreboard, please watch for the sign ups that will be posted with each season.
Season Format
Ideally we are looking to organize teams into groupings of 15 players plus 1 goalie each. Bare minimum we can operate with 10 players per team and 2 goalies total (if the goalies are willing to play all games for the day), this allows for one full line change at a time. With the overwhelming response we got during the Fall 2025 Season we were able to stack each team with 15 players and 1 goalie and we still had players and goalies looking to sub. We plan to move the quantity of teams for Spring 2026 from 6 teams up to 8-10 teams.
The sample season schedule below shows how a season would be organized for 6 teams. Obviously this will need to be adjusted with the increase in teams.
6 Team Sample Season Schedule
Each team will play a total of 10 games where they play every other team exactly twice. The schedule to accommodate this runs across 12 weeks alternating three games one week and two games the following (short) week. This schedule example varies what order the teams play in, gives every team an even split of five home games and five away games, and ensures that no team misses out on two short weeks in a row.
