I've had a handful of new players reach out to me to ask for advice on getting started. I'm still new myself, but here is the list of resources that has helped me the most.
Check your nearest rink for Hockey and Skating classes. I signed up for the Adult Hockey Skills Clinic at the Peaks Ice Arena and it was extremely beneficial as someone new to the sport.
Reddit Hockey Players Subreddit - I have spent a lot of time there and have learned so much that I would not have even thought about asking about.
Pure Hockey in Murray - The guys there are fantastic about answering questions and helping you figure out your sizing for gear.
Play it Again Sports - Two locations in Salt Lake and both locations have plenty of used gear at decent prices (be cautious though, anything brand new there is comparable in pricing to Pure Hockey)
Sideline Swap - If you are willing to spend the time weeding through some of the lesser/worse off items, you can get decent prices for new and used gear.
iTrain Hockey on Youtube - Lots of videos with great information on all things hockey.
All Black Hockey Sticks - When you are starting out, a wooden stick will serve you well. If you are looking to move up to an inexpensive composite, All Black offers decent pricing, especially if you buy more than one stick.
Finally, get some gear (at least the minimum requirements) and start going to stick time at your rink. It's best to practice in full gear if you plan on playing, but ice time is ice time even if you don't have everything you need. Mingle with the other players at stick time, ask questions, take constructive feedback, practice, and start going to drop-in.
Hope this all helps!
